Your Creative Process

Talk about your creative process.

For writing... this is implying I HAVE a process. I just have a vague idea and go for it. Usually I at least have some idea of how the story ends and some big scenes that are going to happen but I find out a lot as I go, too. I did try doing a detailed pre-outline once and it actually worked quite well, but I never did it again. Not because I hated the process but because I'm lazy. Then there was the big work I did last year which started out as a random fluff scene that wouldn't get out of my head and ballooned into a 200k epic without my permission. That's all how I do first drafts anyway. I don't have a satisfactory process for editing or subsequent drafts. I'm trying to work on that but as all this stuff is just for fun and nobody else sees it, it doesn't matter too much - I still want to get better though.

Visual art... is kind of primitive, I draw a lot in pencil and then scan and digitally colour. I use the technique given on this old tutorial most of the time - sketch over flats, multiply layer for shadows, optional highlights. Basic stuff, only real difference is that I use GIMP because I'm cheap. I've done occasional branching out into other styles too but this is what I default to.

Although I probably should branch out because searching some other captures for that site I was reminded of old versions of Painter and their oil pastel tool. I loved that thing. It was so perfectly buttery and vivid and the problem is I've never since found a digital painting tool that feels as nice as that oil pastel.

I also like using coloured pencils, with that I go for the inked drawing with lots of pencil layering look. Again nothing fancy or special but I said before, I like where I am with them.
